HDF5
HDF5 is a completely rewrite of the HDF portable binary format and supporting library, and is the focus of future HDF development at NCSA. Improvements over HDF include support for large files (> 2GB), a cleaner API and data model, and support for parallel I/O and multithreading. HDF5 is incompatible with HDF, but tools exist to convert between the two formats.
