DESCRIPTION
The present improved electronic version of the GCVS4 Volumes
I-V, combined with Name-Lists of Variable Stars Nos.67-78 and NSV catalogue
are available from Sternberg Institute via anonymous ftp, where they are
stored as text files ftp://ftp.sai.msu.su/pub/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs.

This GCVS edition contains data for 28484 individual variable objects discovered and named as variable stars by 1982 and located mainly in the Milky Way galaxy. These data are contained in the first three published volumes. The computer version GCVS4 vols. I-III contains principally the same data as in the first three volumes of the printed catalog. The Name-lists Nos. 67-78 contain variable stars designated between 1982 and 2006; these stars are also incorporated in the combined catalog, but note that their cross-identifications with astronomical catalogues as well as remarks and references may be found in a complete electronic version of the Namelists 67 - 73, 74, 75, 76, 77 and 78.
This data set contains the combined computer-readable version of the GCVS4 Vols. I-III (Kholopov et al. 1985-1988) and Name-Lists of Variable Stars Nos.67-78 published in the system introduced during the preparation of the 4th GCVS edition . The total number of designated variable stars has now reached 40215; of them, 11844 stars enter the Name-Lists Nos.67-78. There are description of the GCVS variability types and distribution statistics of designated variable stars according to their types of variability.
The fourth volume of the fourth edition, published in 1990, contains a table of all variables ordered by right ascension (B1950), a table of variables listed by variability type, and an extensive series of cross-identification tables to alternative designations. The electronic version Volume IV contains only the cross- identification tables.
The final, Volume V (extragalactic variable stars) consists of two catalogues. The catalogue of variable stars in external galaxies contains 10979 variable stars in 35 stellar systems (including the Magellanic Clouds, the large galaxies in Andromeda and Triangulum, etc.). The catalogue of extragalactic supernovae includes 984 confirmed or suspected supernovae.
See also Sternberg Astronomical Institute SN Catalogue (D.Yu. Tsvetkov, N.N. Pavlyuk, O.S. Bartunov).
New Catalogue of Suspected Variable Stars is a compilation of 14811 stars suspected of variability and not finally designated as variables prior to 1980. It is the successor to the "Catalogues of Stars Suspected of Variability" published in 1951 and 1965 (Kukarkin et al.). Data contained in the present catalog of this compilation include positions, magnitudes, variability types, alternate designations, and references to the literature. The computer version of NSV contains principally the same data as in the printed catalog, but only the data table without the textual material (bibliography, remarks) is included.
New Catalogue of Suspected Variable Stars. Supplement - is a compilation of 11206 stars suspected of variability and not finally designated as variables prior to 1997. It is the supplementary part to the "New Catalogue of Suspected Variable Stars" published in 1982 (Kukarkin et al.).
