The
main GCVS problem is that it is no longer a GENERAL catalogue of variable stars (in fact, it even
never was).
• The GCVS always was a
catalogue of galactic variables, with a minor
number of extragalactic stars that were included mainly by misunderstandings. The attempt of the GCVS IV to add an extragalactic volume was not quite successful and will not be repeated, at least by our team.
• For the reason of tradition,
globular-cluster variables are not there (also,
their coordinates are often not known well enough).
• Recently, many thousands of
new variable stars were discovered in automatic
survey projects (for example, some 30000 non-GCVS stars solely in the ASAS-3 project). Most of them remain not included into the GCVS.
